This is a Master Quality Yamanaka or Vajravairabha Shakti Thangka Painting. In this Painting, Yamanaka is seen with his consort, Vajravetali, the wrathful form of Goddess Saraswati. Yamantaka is a wrathful form of Manjushri Bodhisattva that functions as a Dharmapala. Yamantaka is depicted with Buffalo head and is also regarded as Buddhist Guardian diety. He adopted this form to defeat Yama, the lord of death who was interfering with karma by claiming victims before their time was up. Yamantaka submitted to Yama by terrorizing him with his form, one even more frightening than that of Yama himself, which at the same time also acted as a mirror of Yama's horrible appearance. Yama then repented for his actions and became a guardian of dharma. He has seven angry heads and a large buffalo head at the center, topped with another angry head and Manjushri’s, with 9 faces, 34 hands, and 16 legs.
