This is an incredible piece of art - an old oil-varnished Machig Labdron Thangka Painting. Machig Labdron, also known as Ahkon Chodron in Tibetan, is one of the most prominent female masters and lineage holders in Buddhism. She was a remarkable 11th-century Tibetan tantric Buddhist master and yogini known for originating several Tibetan lineages of the Vajrayana practice of Chöd. What's fascinating about her is that she was a Tibetan woman who stood out among the typical male Indian Buddhist masters. Her life story is truly inspiring - she was a dedicated practitioner, a beggar, a gifted teacher, a mother, and a lineage founder.

The story of Machig Labdron's spiritual journey is fascinating. It begins with her earlier life as an Indian prince who later became a monk named Mönlam Drup. From a young age, he had exceptional spiritual and scholarly achievements and received visions instructing him to go to Tibet to help beings there. At age twenty, he entered a cave, left his body, and combined his consciousness with a fierce blue-black dakini, leading to his rebirth as Machig in Tibet.

Numerous auspicious dreams and signs marked Machig's birth, the most significant being the appearance of the syllable AH on her forehead at the place of her third eye. Recognized as a sign of a Dakini by her father, Chökyi Dawa, Machig's spiritual gifts were supported and nurtured by her family from an early age. She was dedicated and showed extraordinary abilities, such as reciting The Perfection of Wisdom in Eight Thousand Lines at eight years old. By thirteen, she was renowned for her extensive recitation abilities and profound knowledge of Buddhist scholarship. After losing her mother, she traveled with her sister to study with various great teachers. At around 20, she met Kyotön Sonam Lama, who encouraged her to investigate her mind and move beyond mere recitation and conceptual understanding. This led her to give up her comfortable life and embrace a new chapter of wandering, associating with outcasts, and living a simple, humble existence.
