This is a hand-painted Mahakali Newari Pauba Painting. The Paubas are equivalent to Tibetan Thangka and are painted by the Newar communities of Kathmandu valley. The Mahakali is the most fierce Goddess of universal power, time, death, and both rebirth and liberation. She devours Kala (Time) and then resumes her dark formlessness. She is also the consort of Bhairava, the god of consciousness. Mahakali is the feminized variant of Mahakala or Great Time (which is interpreted also as Death in Hinduism.
